ATA 2150

AFTER DEPARTURE, NOTICED WHAT APPEARED TO BE SPARKS STREAMING FROM THE LT EXTERIOR NOSE PORTION OF THE FUSELAGE. AT APPROXIMATELY A MINUTE THE SPARKS STOPPED. NO OTHER SYMPTOMS WERE NOTICED. ACFT MAINTENANCE FOUND THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR MOTOR WAS SPARKING WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WAS OPERATED. THE AIR CONDITIONING SYS WAS DEFERRED AND WHEN THE ACFT RETURNED TO THE MAIN HANGAR WHERE MX IS PERFORMED THE ACFT WAS ASSESSED AND TROUBLESHOT FOR THE SPARKS. IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR MOTOR WAS DEFECTIVE, THE MOTOR WAS THEN REPLACED AND ALL CHECKS CHECKED GOOD.

THIS REPORT IS A SUPPLEMENT FROM 10 JUNE, 2011: THE PROP RPM INDICATION HAS FUNCTIONED NORMALLY SINCE THE INITIAL REPAIR OF THE ERRONIOUS INDICATION. THE PROP TACH GENERATOR WAS REPLACED WITH AN O/H PART. THE TIME SINCE NEW AND O/H ON THE FAILED PART IS UNKNOWN. NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE WAS VISIBLE TO THE REMOVED TACH GEN OR ITS DRIVE. SUSPECT THAT THE SIGNAL STRENGTH WAS AFFECTED BY UNKNOW INTERNAL MALFUNCTION.

BEFORE LANDING, WHEN GEAR WAS SELECTED DOWN, THE RT GREEN DOWN LIGHT FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. THE GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT AND HORN DID NOT INDICATE AN UNLOCKED GEAR. AFTER A FLYBY AND A VISUAL LOOK BY GROUND PERSONNEL, THE FAILED GEAR LIGHT CAME ON AND A LANDING WAS MADE WITH NORMAL INDICATORS. THE DOWN LOCK SWITCH WAS TESTED AND FOUND INTERMITTENT. THE SWITCH WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW PART AND FUNCTION TESTED FOR PROPER CONSISTENT FUNCTION. (K)

THE ROLLER BEARINGS HAVE VERY LITTLE SIDE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE BEARING AND THE FLAP RIBS. AS THE BEARING WEARS SIDE PLAY INCREASES TO THE POINT WHERE THE BEARING FLANGE CONTACTS THE RIB. MFG HAS NOT PROVIDED ANY CHAFE PROTECTION ON THIS SIDE OF THE BEARING, THEREFORE, THE BEARING BEGINS TO CUT INTO THE RIB AS IT ROLLS FORE AND AFT. A SMALL THIN TEFLON WASHER WOULD PREVENT CONTACT AND ALLOW BEARING WEAR TO BE DETECTED BEFORE DAMAGE OCCURS. (K)
