DEPARTED AIRPORT AT 0951 WITH VFR CONDITIONS, CLEAR SKIES 12 MILES VISIBILITY. 1.5 MILES SOUTHWEST AT AN ALTITUDE OF 500 FT AND CLIMBING, HEARD A LOUD REPORT ASSOCIATED WITH A HARD RT YAW AND NR DECREASING THROUGH 92 PERCENT. HAD JUST PASSED OVER A CLEAR AREA AND HAD NO SAFE LANDING AHEAD OF ME. IMMEDIATELY REDUCED COLLECTIVE, ROLLED THE THROTTLE TO FLIGHT IDLE AND ENTERED A HARD RT TURN. MADE A MAYDAY CALL ON 122.8 AND SWITCHED TO 123.07 FOR A SECOND MAYDAY CALL. AN AUTO ROTATIONAL LANDING WAS MADE TO A DRY SAND PIT WITH NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT.

MAIN ROTOR BLADES FAILED TO TURN BY SPECIFIED N1 SPEED UPON STARTING ENGINE. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT SOMETHING INSIDE OF TURBINE WAS RUBBING DUE TO SOUND COMING FROM TURBINE WHEN ROTOR WAS TURNED BACKWARDS. TURBINE WAS REMOVED AND DISASSEMBLED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE 4TH STAGE NOZZLE #4 BLADE PATH HAD DISBONDED AND WAS RUBBING THE #4 TURBINE WHEEL OUTER DIAMETER KNIFE EDGES CREATING DRAG THAT WAS CAUSING PROBLEM WITH MAIN ROTOR NOT TURNING ON START. DISBONDING WAS IN APPROXIMATELY 25 SEPARATE SPOTS SPACED AROUND CIRCUMFRENCE OF BLADE PATH, WITH THE LARGEST SPOT BEING AROUND ONE QUARTER INCH IN DIAMETER, ROUGHLY ROUND IN SHAPE AND RAISED ENOUGH TO CONTACT THE WHEEL OUTER DIAMETER. STACK CRACKED AS REAR WELD SEAM. REMOVED AND REMOVED STACK.
MOISTURE GETS TRAPPED UNDER THE HEADER AND CAUSES A SHORT ON THE 180V DC LINE. BURNS THE BOARD AND HEADER.
PART HAS SHOWN HISTORY OF ARCING BETWEEN PINS 15 AND 14. THIS IS A HIGH VOLTAGE PROBLEM AND HAS BEEN SEEN IN NUMEROUS UNITS. IT CAUSES THE CIRCUIT BOARD TO BURN AND CAUSES A SHORT ON TEH 180V LINE, SOMETIMES DAMAGING THE POWER SUPPLY IN THE RADIO.
