ATA 8550

THE PILOT WAS IN LEVEL FLIGHT EN-ROUTE TO KPDX WHEN THE LEFT ENGINE OIL PRESSURE BEGAN DROPPING OFF. THE OIL PRESSURE DROPPED FROM 30 PSI TO 20 PSI IN 30 SECONDS TIME AND OIL TEMPERATURE WAS RED-LINED AT 250 DEGREES. THE PILOT FOLLOWING PROCEDURES SHUT DOWN THE LEFT ENGINE AND NOTIFIED ATC. THEN LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT IN KPDX AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS TOWED TO THE RAMP ONCE CLEAR OF THE ACTIVE. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED THE LEFT ENGINE FOR EXTERNAL OIL LEAKS AND DETERMINED THAT THE PROP-GOVERNOR OR THE SEAL TO THE PROP-GOVERNOR HAD FAILED. THE ENGINE HAD LOST A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF OIL AND MAINTENANCE REMOVED AND INSPECTED THE OIL FILTER AND FOUND METAL. THE ENGINE P\N TIO-540-J2B WAS REMOVED AND A SERVICEABLE UNIT WAS INSTALLED.

AFTER TAKEOFF AT FULL POWER, DETECTED AN UNKNOWN ODOR, REDUCED POWER TO APPROXIMATELY 30" MAP, ODOR WENT AWAY. AFTER LANDING PERFORMED A FULL POWER RUNUP, ODOR RETURNED. COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE ODOR AS EITHER FUEL FUMES, EXHAUST FUMES OR BURNING ODOR. CHECKED BY MAINTENANCE, NO DISCREPANCIES NOTED.

ATA 6120

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT ON CLIMBOUT, ENGINE INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. AT APPROX 6500FT RT ENGINE PROP RPM SUDDENLY WENT TO REDLINE. BROUGHT RT PROP LEVER BACK WHICH HAD NO EFFECT ON THE PROP RPM. REDUCED RT THROTTLE TO BRING THE RPM DOWN TO 2500. NOTIFIED DISPATCH AND WAS ADVISED TO RETURN. DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH DEPARTURE AND RETURNED AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. MX INSPECTED RT PROP CONTROL SYSTEM AND FOUND THE BALL JOINT P/N 54175-000 BROKEN AT THE ATTACH POINT ON THE PROP GOVERNOR INPUT LEVER. THE BALL JOINT WAS REPLACED AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO SERVICE. TIME IN SERVICE ON THE BALL JOINT IS UNKNOWN.

ATA 2140

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE CO2 DETECTOR TURNED BLACK AND DETECTED EXHAUST DURING THE FLIGHT. MX PERFORMED A DECAY TEST ON THE HEATER AND IT FAILED. FIRST POST OVH DECAY TEST WAS DUE IN 139 HOURS TT ON THE CERAMIC COMBUSTION TUBE. TUBE WAS 1121. MFG RECOMMENDED TBO FOR THIS UNIT IS 1500 HOURS. THIS UNIT WAS OVERHAULED AT 900 HOURS. THE COMBUSTION TUBES ARE OK TO REINSTALL AFTER DETAILED VISUAL INSPECTION, WHICH THIS TUBE PASSED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE IMPROVED CERAMIC COATED COMBUSTION TUBES BE REPLACED AT OVERHAUL, AND THAT THE OVERHAUL PERIOD BE REDUCED, AS THIS TUBE WOULD NOT HAVE MADE IT TO A "NORMAL" OVERHAUL. (K)
