Maintenance disclosures
CREW AND PASSENGERS NOTICED THE SMELL OF EXHAUST AFTER THE APU WAS STARTED ON THE DECENT FOR LANDING. MAINTENANCE WAS CALLED TO TROUBLESHOOT THE CAUSE AFTER LANDING. ON INSPECTION, THEY FOUND THE APU TURBINE HOUSING HAD A CRACK IN IT AT ABOUT THE 5 O'CLOCK POSITION, ADJACENT TO THE FUEL NOZZLE. THE APU WAS PLACED ON MEL AND IS BEING REMOVED AND A LOANER INSTALLED.
PART HAD CRACK 2 INCHES LONG STARTING AT BASE AND GOING UP WITH 2 SMALL BRANCHES AT TOP. AT RENWAL, FOUND LIGHT TO MODERATE CORROSION ON INTERIOR WALL. ALL CORROSION WAS CONTAINED WITHIN 6 INCHES OF BASE. CRACKS BELIEVED TO BE CAUSED BY CORROSION. (X)
ON APPROACH, HYDRAULIC SELECTOR WAS PUT TO DOWN POSITION, A THUD WAS HEARD FOLLOWED BY LOSS OF HYDRAULIC FLUID. LANDING GEAR WAS EXTENDED BY FREE-FALL PROCEDURE. LANDING WAS MADE WITHOUT A PROBLEM.
