POWER LEVER WAS REDUCED TO FLIGHT IDLE AS INSTRUCTED BY QRH AND CONTINUED MONITORING THE OIL TEMPERATURE GAUGE. APPROXIMATELY OVER 10 MILES AFTER FIRST INITIAL NOTIFICATION, THE LEFT OIL TEMPERATURE GAUGE NEEDLE SPIKED ABOVE RED LINE AND STABILIZED OVER THE RED LINE AND OTHER ENGINES INDICATIONS ARE NORMAL. CREW PERFORMED MID-AIR PREPLANNED ENGINE SHUTDOWN AS INSTRUCTED BY QRH; CREW THEN INFORMED CENTER REGARDING THE PRECAUTIONARY ENGINE SHUTDOWN AND WOULD LIKE VECTORS TO RUNWAY 4 DECLINED TO DECLARE AN EMERGENCY AS IT WAS NOT PRACTICAL SINCE THE AIRCRAFT COULD EASILY MAINTAIN ALTITUDE AND HEADING. THE PILOT PERFORMED THE SINGLE ENGINE DESCENT, APPROACH AND LANDING CHECKLIST VIA THE QRH AND SAFELY LANDED WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE FOUND THE LEFT ENGINE OIL TEMP SENDING UNIT (TEMP BULB) WAS DEFECTIVE. REPLACED THE LEFT ENGINE TEMP SENDING UNIT. GROUND RUN COMPLETED, OPERATIONAL CHECK OF THE LEFT ENGINE OIL TEMP SYSTEM WAS NORMAL.

A SHORT TIME LATER IT STOPPED AT 500 LBS. APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES LATER THE FUEL QUANTITY DECREASES ANOTHER 150 LBS. AFTER ANALYZING THE SITUATION, THE PILOT DECIDED TO RETURN TO KDFW AS A PRECAUTION OF A SUSPECTED FUEL LEAK. ATC DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND THE LANDING WAS WITHOUT INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED AIRCRAFT AND FOUND NO FUEL LEAK. A FUEL QUALITY CHECK WITH THE MAGNA STICKS CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATOR MALFUNCTION. MAINTENANCE REMOVED AND INSTALLED A SERVICEABLE RIGHT FUEL QTY HARNESS, PART NUMBER AMF32-82030-008.THEY ALSO REMOVED AND INSTALLED A SERVICEABLE RIGHT #2 FUEL PROBE, PART NUMBER PAA575-4. THE CALIBRATION OF THE FUEL INDICATOR WAS COMPLIED WITH. ALL CHECKS FOUND SATISFACTORY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO SERVICE AND NO ISSUES HAVE BEEN REPORTED ON ANY SUBSEQUENT FLIGHT.

THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT IN MSP. MAINTENANCE REPLACED THE INBOARD DOWN AND LOCKED SWITCH. SYSTEM OPERATED SATISFACTORILY. (Z)
