BURNING SMELL FOR ABOUT 5 MINS AFTER 30 MINUTES IN FLIGHT. IT CAME ON INTENSELY TWICE DURING THOSE 5 MINUTES. THE WAS NO ANY INDICATION OF SMOKE OR ANY EICAS MESSAGE. THE NEXT 40 MINUTES OF FLYING WAS UNEVENTFUL. (FLIGHT 1300 - FILED CLOSED)COMPLIED WITH FIM 21-21-00 TABLE 201 AND FOUND RH POST MAP LIGHT TO BE EXTREMELY HOT TO THE TOUCH AND EMITTING A HOT SMELL. REMOVED AND REPLACED RH POST MAP LIGHT PER AMM 33-13-03 AND OP CHECK GOOD. ALSO COMPLIED WITH FIM 21-22-00 FIG 210 AND FOUND NO BURNING SMELL WITH PACK OPERATION AND ENGINES RUNNING.

OVERHEAD BINS WERE OPENED AND NO SOURCE OF LION BATTERY RUNAWAY WAS DETECTED. POST FLIGHT INSPECTION OF OVERHEADS BY CREW IN ROW 6-8 DOES NOT SHOW ANY SCORCH/BURN DAMAGE. ONCE SMELL WENT AWAY IT DID NOT RETURN. NO EICAS MESSAGES ASSOCIATED WITH SMOKE/FUMES IN FLIGHT DECK. NO FUMES/SMOKE VISIBLE IN CABIN (FLIGHT #3229 FILED CLOSED) INSPECTED THE PAX COMPARTMENT FROM ROW 6 TO ROW 8 AND DETECTED NO FOUL OR ACRID ODOR. DID FIND NAPKINS STUFFED IN THE SIDEWALL LIGHT ASSY NEXT TO THE LIGHT THAT IS MOST LIKELY THE CAUSE OF THE SMELL.. CHECKED ALL BALLASTS FROM ROW 6 TO ROW 8 AND FOUND NO BURNING OR DISCOLORED AREAS. REMOVED NAPKINS AS NEEDED. OK FOR CONTINUED SERVICE.
FLIGHT CREW AND PASSENGERS REPORT A BURNING SMELL IN THE AREA OF THE 4TH ROW OF SEATS. FLIGHT ATTENDANT REMARKED THAT THE BALLAST DOOR OVER SEATS 4 DC WAS ABNORMALLY HOT COMPARED TO OTHER BALLAST DOORS. ( FLIGHT 3278 - FILED CLOSED) / REFERENCED SERVICE LETTER SL-21-028 DATED 1 JAN, 2013 FOR APPLICABLE TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS. NARROWED THE SEARCH TO THE ROW 4 CD BALLAST PANEL ON THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS TESTIMONY. NOTED THE CEILING LIGHT BALLAST WAS NOTABLY HOTTER THEN THE SIDEWALL. REMOVED AND PRESENTED THE PS74 BALLAST TO THE FLIGHT CREW IN REFERENCE TO AMM 33-21-03 SO THEY COULD EXAMINE THE AROMA AND THEY AGREED THAT THE BALLAST HAD A SIMILAR ODOR TO THAT THEY WITNESSED IN FLIGHT. REINSTALLED THE PS74 INTO ITS SPOT AND AFTER TURNING ON THE AIRCRAFT THE BALLAST MADE A POP SOUND AND BEGAN TO SMOKE VISIBLY. REMOVED AND REPLACED THE PS74 AND THE PS75 BALLAST IN REFERENCE TO AMM 33-21-03 AND 33-21-09. WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED NOTED NO CONTINUED ODOR FROM THE BALLASTS. INTERROGATED THE AIRCRAFT'S IN SERVICE LOG ENTRIES GOING BACK 30 DAYS AND IDENTIFIED NO SMOKE EVENTS BUT ON THE 25 OF MAY THE 4 C CEILING LIGHT WAS REPORTED INOPERATIVE. OPS CHECK OF THE CEILING AND SIDEWALL LIGHTS IS GOOD AT THIS TIME.

A PLAN HAS BEEN DEVISED TO INCORPORATE THIS MOD IN THE NEXT FEW QUARTERS.

PDX-ENROUTE, FLIGHT ATTENDANTS COMPLAINED OF AN ODOR TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE CABIN CAUSING THEIR EYES TO BURN AND FELT SICK. GROUND RAN BOTH ENGINES. NO SMELLS NOTICED IN BLEED SYSTEM. HAD LAVATORY SERVICED, NO SMELLS NOTICED AT THAT TIME. NO PARTS REPLACED. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
BOI - FUEL LEAK NOTED IN FRONT OF LEFT WHEEL WELL. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED AND REPLACED THE ENGINE FUEL FEED SWITCH. OPERATIONAL AND LEAK CHECKS WERE GOOD. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
LAX - CREW RECEIVED A LEFT FUEL LOW PRESSURE WHILE EN ROUTE AT FL 390. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND REPLACED THE ENGINE FUEL FEED SWITCH. OPERATIONAL AND LEAK CHECKS WERE GOOD. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
PDX - CREW RETURNED TO FIELD WHEN AFTER TAKE-OFF, THE AFT CARGO DOOR CAUTION ILLUMINATED WITH A STATUS MESSAGE THAT READ PROX SYSTEM FAULT 2. PSI DIFFERENTIAL WAS SEVEN. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND ADJUSTED THE PROX SENSOR AND LUBED THE AFT CARGO DOOR HANDLE. AN OPERATIONAL CHECK AND GROUND PRESSURIZATION WAS PERFORMED. NO DISCREPANCIES WERE NOTED. AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO SERVICE.

BOI - ABORTED TAKEOFF. TAKEOFF RPM (N1) ON NR 1 ENGINE APPROXIMATELY 10 PERCENT BELOW REQUIRED INDICATION, FADEC CALLED FOR 88.2 PERCENT, N1 INDICATOR SHOWED APPROXIMATELY 76.3 PERCENT. REMOVED OBSTRUCTION FROM MAIN FUEL PUMP INLET AND REINSTALLED. GROUND RAN, ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL. NO PARTS REPLACED. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
BOI- FORWARD CARGO COMPARTMENT CHIMNEY IN ENTRYWAY DAMAGED. REMOVED AND REPLACED CARGO COMPARTMENT FIRE DETECTOR CHIMNEY. OPERATIONAL CHECK GOOD. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
SMF- ON DESCENT INTO SMF, THERE WAS A HOT PLASTIC SMELL IN THE CABIN AND THOUGH AIR VENTS IN COCKPIT. SMELL DISSIPATED AFTER 5 MINUTES. INSPECTED AIR VENTILATION AND AVIONICS COOLING. NO PARTS REPLACED. NO DISCREPANCIES NOTED. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
