DURING A TRAINING FLIGHT, WE WENT TO 3,500 FEET AND ENTERED AUTOROTATION BY RETARDING BOTH ENGINE LEVERS TO IDLE. AFTER ESTABLISHING A STABILIZED AUTOROTATIONAL GLIDE, I BEGAN THE RECOVERY BY FIRST MOVING THE NR 2 ENGINE LEVER BACK TO FLY. I THEN STARTED MOVING THE NR 1 ENGINE LEVER TO FLY. ABOUT HALF WAY BETWEEN IDLE AND FLY, THE ENGINE QUIT. RATHER THAN TRY TO RESTART THE ENGINE IN FLIGHT, WE PROCEEDED TO ABBEVILLE AIRPORT AND PERFORMED A SINGLE ENGINE LANDING. AFTER MAINTENANCE CHECKED THE ENGINE, WE STARTED BOTH ENGINES AND CHECKED NR 1 BY MOVING THE ENGINE LEVER DIRECTLY TO “FLY” AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE. APPROXIMATELY ONE MINUTE AFTER DEPARTING SMI 61C, MAIN TRANSMISSION CHIP LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITHOUT CORRESPONDING MASTER CAUTION LIGHT. POWER WAS REDUCED AND THE APPROPRIATE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE, IAW THE RFM, WAS INTIATED. LIGHT DID NOT EXTINGUISH, RETURNED TO SMI 61C AND SECURED THE AIRCRAFT WHICH HAD 34 MINUTES OF FLIGHT TIME ON CLOCK AT THE TIME OF ILLUMINATION. ONE OF THE PASSENGERS WAS AN AVIATION MECHANIC, (GLEN PATCH) WHO CONTACTED MAINTENANCE.

WINDSHIELD IS CRACKED ON RIGHT HAND SIDE OF WINDSHIELD. CRACK RUNS INBOARD TOWARD CENTER OF WINDSHIELD FROM RIGHT HAND SIDE. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR CRACKING IN THESE WINDSHIELDS BEFORE. THE MECHANICS INVOLVED THINK THIS CRACKING IS DUE TO THE STRESSES CREATED BY POOR FITTING WINDSHIELDS. THE WINDSHIELDS DO NOT MATCH AIRCRAFT CONTOURS VERY WELL. REPLACED WINDSHIELD.

PART IS LEAKING OIL. OIL SEAL HAD BECOME DISPLACED FROM FUEL PUMP DRIVE SEAL BORE IN ENGINE GEARBOX. OIL WAS COMING OUT OF THE FUEL PUMP CASE DRAIN, THROUGH THE DRAIN HOSE AND OUT OF THE DRAIN CLUSTER ON THE BELLY OF THE AIRCRAFT. FUEL PUMP WAS REMOVED, THE DRIVE SEAL WAS REPLACED WITH NEW SEAL AND THE FUEL PUMP WAS REINSTALLED.
