PRIOR TO EVENT FLIGHT PILOT REPORTED AN UNUSUAL SOUND WHILE ON APPROACH TO LAND. THE ENGINE FAILED 35 MINUTES INTO A 40 MINUTE FLIGHT. THE PILOT PULLED THE THROTTLE IMMEDIATELY ONCE THE ENGINE BEGAN TO VIBRATE AND CONTINUED TO SECURE THE ENGINE AND ACFT FOR AN OFF FIELD LANDING.

Part: IMPULSE COUPLING — CRACKED (MAGNETO)

WHILE CONDUCTING THE INSPECTION REQUIRED BY AD 99-04-04, CRACKS WERE DISCOVERED ON THE PAWL PLATE OF THE IMPULSE COUPLING. THE CRACKS WERE DIFFICULT TO SEE SINCE THE AREA IS HIDDEN BY THE PAWLS. THE PAWL SPRINGS MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE SPRING HOLES SO THE PAWL CAN BE ROTATED OUT OF THE WAY.
