ON APPROACH ATTEMPTED INTO KBFL, LANDING GEAR HANDLE WAS SELECTED TO DOWN POSITION, LANDING GEAR GREEN POSITION LIGHTS DID NOT ILLUMINATE, NEITHER DID GEAR IN-TRANSIT LIGHTS. GEAR WAS MANUALLY EXTENDED. EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS FERRIED FROM KBFL TO KBUR. BUR MAINTENANCE PERFORMED SEVERAL GEAR SWINGS. THE GEAR IN TRANSIT AND GREEN DOWN LOCK POSITION LIGHTS OPERATED NORMALLY. THE GEAR MOTOR LIGHT OPERATED NORMALLY. THE GEAR OPERATIONAL CHECKS WERE FOUND TO BE GOOD.

DURING FLIGHT BETWEEN KHWD AND KBUR AT CRUISE ALTITUDE THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE LEFT ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST POWER WITH NO WARNING OR NEGATIVE TRENDING INDICATIONS. ENGINE SPONTANEOUSLY STARTED SMOKING AND FLASHES OF LIGHT OF WHAT APPEARED TO BE SPARKS OR FIRE WERE VISIBLE OUT THE EXHAUST PIPE. THE PILOT CONFIRMED THAT THE LEFT ENGINE WAS FAILING AND INITIATED AN IN-FLIGHT ENGINE SHUTDOWN PER AMF EMERGENCY PROCEDURES CHECKLIST, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH LA CENTER AND WAS VECTORED TO KBFL AIRPORT. PILOT LANDED VFR AT KBFL AIRPORT WITH NO OTHER COMPLICATIONS. AMF MAINTENANCE IS CURRENTLY CHANGING THE LEFT ENGINE; ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO FOLLOW CONCERNING CAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE.

WIRES UNDER CAPTAINS SIDE YOKE SPARKED AND BEGAN TO SMOLDER. LOST PRIMARY TRIM, PULLED CIRCUIT BREAKER AND CONTINUED ON AUX TRIM. LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED THE WIRING, AND FOUND A BROKEN WIRE ON THE MAIN TRIM ON THE CAPTAINS SIDE YOKE. THE WIRE WAS REPAIRED, AND THE SYSTEM FUNCTION TESTED GOOD.

DURING CLIMB-OUT, POS RATE GEAR SELECTED. THE GEAR GREEN LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND A LOUD CLACK-TYPE THUMP WAS HEARD. CYCLED THE GEAR DOWN AND PERCEIVED NO INDICATION OF MOVEMENT. OBSERVED THE GEAR CONTROL CIRCUIT BREAKER HAD POPPED AND WAS COOL TO THE TOUCH AND TRIED A RESET. CYCLED THE GEAR TO THE UP POSITION AND THE RT GEAR REMAINED DOWN. LOOKED OUTSIDE THE AIRCRAFT AND OBSERVED BOTH LT AND RT MAIN GEAR DOORS OPEN. CONTACTED MX AND AFTER MAKING CERTAIN THE MANUAL EXTENSION HANDLE WAS DOWN, AN ONE MORE DOWN UP CYCLE, MANUAL GEAR EXTENSION SUCCESSFUL. EMERGENCY DECLARED. UNEVENTFUL LANDING. OPEN
