DURING AAIP A 0312 ZONE 12 AIRFRAME INSPECTION, DISCOVERED DAMAGE ON INTERIOR TAIL BOOM OMEGA STRINGER. DAMAGE IS LOCATED ON THE INSIDE TAIL BOOM UPPER RT OMEGA STRINGER 130MM FROM FLANGE OPENING. DAMAGE IS 10MM X 7MM WITH A MAX DEPTH OF .030 INCHES. SUSPECTED CAUSE WAS FROM AN ALUMINUM HYD HOSE CLAMP PN 1120-43021.07 THAT WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE STRINGER.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DEPARTURE, WHILE CLIMBING THROUGH 100 FT, PILOT COULD NOT CONTACT DISPATCH VIA FM RADIO AND ALSO SMELLED BURNING ELECTRONICS. DECISION MADE TO ABORT FLIGHT AND RETURN TO BASE. MX CHECKED FM RADIO FOR OPERATION, FOUND AUDIO PANEL SELECTOR SWITCH INCORRECTLY PLACED. OPERATION OF RADIO FOUND GOOD. INSPECTED FOR SOURCE OF ODOR. USING GROUND POWER SUPPLY. ALL ACFT SYS OPERATING PROPERLY. NO BURNED ELECTRICAL ODOR FOUND. ACFT GROUND RUN AND SUBSEQUENTLY CHECK FLOWN WITH NO ODORS FOUND. POSSIBLE THAT THE ODOR CAME FROM BURNING AT A LOCAL REFINERY AND NOT THE ACFT.

SHORTED UNIT CAUSED INSTRUMENT LIGHTS TO BECOME INOPERATIVE AND THEN POPPED THE INSTRUMENT LIGHT CIRCUIT BREAKER.
