DURING FLIGHT, THE CREW EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT VIBRATION. THEY LANDED AT THE NEAREST AIRPORT. EXAMINATION REVEALED THAT THE NR 4 CYLINDER HAD A STUCK VALVE, RESULTING IN A BENT PUSHROD. THE CYLINDER AND PUSHRODS WERE REPLACED WITH A REPAIRED/NEW UNITS.

DURING INITIAL CLIMB, THE CREW EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT POWER LOSS. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT LANDED THE AIRPLANE ON AN ALTERNATE RUNWAY. INSPECTION REVEALED A CRACK IN THE NR 2 CYLINDER HEAD ORIGINATING FROM THE INTAKE VALVE SEAT AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE CYLINDER TO THE OUTSIDE BETWEEN THE COOLING FINS. A COMPRESSION CHECK REVEALED A LARGE AMOUNT OF AIR EXITING THROUGH THIS CRACK MAKING AN AUDIBLE HISSING.

DURING FLIGHT, PILOT REPORTED ROUGH ENGINE OPERATION FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE INJECTOR NOZZLES WERE CLEANED, THE SPARK PLUGS WERE SERVICED, AND THE ELECTRIC BOOST PUMP WAS REPLACED. (X)

DURING AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT, THE INSTRUCTOR WAS DEMONSTRATING A SIMULATED EMERGENCY LANDING. WHEN THE POWER WAS APPLIED, THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. PRECAUTIONARY LANDING WAS MADE.

THIS OPERATOR HAS A FLEET OF CESSNA 172R AIRCRAFT (15). THERE IS A TREND DEVELOPING WHERE THE PILOTS WRITE UP THE FUEL SYSTEM FOR UNEVEN BURN FROM LT AND RT TANKS WHEN THE FUEL SELECTOR IS ON 'BOTH'. THERE IS NO DEFINITIVE REPAIR YET, BUT THE PROBLEM IS BECOMING MORE REPETITIVE. THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING.
