INFLIGHT EXPERIENCED ELECTRICAL BURNING ODOR AFTER A GRINDING SOUND. RETURNED TO DEPARTURE. AT THE GATE NOTICED THE CIRCUIT BREAKER FOR THE AVIONIC VENT EXTRACT FAN TRIPPED; INSPECTED THE ACFT FOR EVIDENCE OF ANY ELECTRICAL BURNING SIGNS. NOTED EXTRACTION FAN 18HQ BURNED OUT CAUSING THE ELECTRICAL ODOR NOTED BY FLIGHT CREW. REMOVED & REPLACED THE FAN IAW AMM 21-26-51. AVEC TESTED OK IAW AMM 21-26-00, AND TSM 05-50-00.
AT TOP OF DESCENT, THERE WAS A BURNED MATERIAL ODOR IN THE COCKPIT. SOON DISSAPATED, AT 2200 MSL ON APPROACH A VERY STRONG DIRTY SOCK ODOR PERMEATED THE FLIGHT DECK & DID NOT GO AWAY UNTIL ENGINE SHUTDOWN. R & R THE NR 1 ENGINE.
DESCENDING THROUGH 12000 FEET APU OSS AT FLIGHT IDLE , FA'S SMELLED THE DIRTY SOCK ODOR AND NOTICIED IT IN COCKPIT. IT SEEMS TO OCCUR MOSTLY WHEN POWER GOES TO IDLE . WHEN REDUCED POWER TO IDLE GOT STRONGEST BLAST OF ODOR. FINDINGS FOR OIL ODOR IN CABIN ARE AS FOLLOWS (1)-ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION FOR LAST 7 DAYS ENG 1-2.2 QTS ENG 2-3.1 QTS (2)-ENGINE GEAR BOX DRAIN ENG 1-2.5 QTS ENG 2- 2.5 QTS (3)-ENGINE BOROSCOPE FOUND COKING ON THE NR 1 ENG AT 2.5 STAGE. AS PER POWERPLANT ENGINEERING, TECH SUPPORT AND IAE REP, RECOMMENDED FOR ENGINE WASH, PACK BURN AND THEN PACK OZONE FILTER CHANGES. THE NR 2 ENGINE FOUND WITH NO ABNORMAL FINDINGS.

EVERY TIME CREW REDUCED POWER TO IDLE GOT THE STRONGEST BLAST OF ODOR. FINDINGS FOR OIL ODOR IN CABIN ARE AS FOLLOWS (1)-ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION FOR LAST 7 DAYS ENG NR 1-2.2 QTS ENGNR 2 -3.1 QTS (2)- ENGINE GEAR BOX DRAIN ENG NR 1-2.5 QTS ENG#2- 2.5 QTS (3)-ENGINE BOROSCOPE FOUND COKING ON #1 ENG AT 2.5 STAGE. AS PER POWERPLANT ENGINEERING, TECH SUPPORT AND IAE REP, RECOMMENDED FOR ENGINE WASH, PACK BURN AND THEN PACK OZONE FILTER CHANGES. ENGINE WILL HAVE DEFERRAL ASSIGNED TO CHECK THE 2.5 STAGE AND A LATER TIME. ENGINE #2 FOUND WITH NO ABNORMAL FINDINGS.
R2 DOOR SILL AT FRAME 68, STR 23R HAS CORROSION. REMOVED CORROSION AND INSTALLED REPAIR ANGLE REPAIR REF SRM 53-41-14.
