Part: SPAR — DAMAGED (LT/RT WING SPAR)

DISMANTLED LEFT AND RIGHT WING FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECOVERING. WITH THE OLD FABRIC REMOVED, FOUND BOTH REAR SPARS HAD BEEN CHEWED BY MICE MIDWAY BETWEEN THE WING ROOT AND THE STRUT ATTACH FITTING. IT APPEARS THIS DAMAGE WAS PRESENT WHEN THE WINGS WERE LAST RECOVERED IN 1982 BECAUSE THE CHEW MARKS WERE VARNISHED OVER. THE MAXIMUM DAMAGE THAT CAN EXIST BETWEEN THE SPAR ROOT AND STRUT ATTACH POINT IS .0937 INCH IN DEPTH. ALSO, NO SPAR SPLICING IS ALLOWED IN THIS AREA.

DISMANTLED BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT WINGS FOR RECOVERING. ALL SPARS WERE REMOVED FOR CLEANING, INSPECTION, AND VARNISHING. WITH THE WING SPAR FITTINGS REMOVED, FOUND THE SPAR FITTING HOLES HAD CRACKS EMANATING FROM THE TWO INBOARD HOLES THROUGH THE BUTT OF THE SPAR. ALL FOUR SPARS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW. SUBMITTER RECOMMENDS CLOSE INSPECTION OF ALL ATTACHMENT AREAS OF THE SPARS AT EACH TIME THE WINGS ARE RECOVERED OR REBUILT DUE TO WING IMPACT OR ROLL-OVER.

DISMANTLED LEFT WING FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECOVERING. AS A PRECAUTION, THE WING SPAR ATTACHMENT FITTINGS WERE MAGNAFLUXED. THE LEFT FRONT WING SPAR ATTACHMENT FITTING WAS FOUND TO HAVE SEVERAL IMPERFECTIONS IN THE WELDED AREA OF BOTH THE TOP AND BOTTOM GUSSETS. THE FITTING WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW PART. IT APPEARS SOME OF THE IMPERFECTIONS ARE FROM PITTING (CORROSION) AND SOME ARE VERY SMALL CRACKS. RECOMMEND NDT AT EACH TIME OF RECOVERING OR REBUILDING AFTER WING IMPACT OF ROLL-OVER DAMAGE.

DISMANTLED BOTH LT AND RT WINGS FOR THE PURPOSE OF RECOVERING. IN THE PROCESS OF REMOVING OLD COVER, DETERMINED THAT ALL THE SCREWS THAT SECURE THE FABRIC TO THE RIBS FOR THE NR 2 AND NR 3 INBOARD RIBS OF EACH WING, HAD ELONGATED THE HOLES IN THE RIBS AND WAS NOT SERVING THE INTENDED PURPOSE OF SECURING THE FABRIC. THE SCREW HOLES WERE ELONGATED THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE RIB CAP FLANGE AND HAD SEVERAL WITH CRACKS EMITTING FROM THEM. THE NR 3 INBOARD RIB ON LEFT WING WAS CRACKED COMPLETELY THROUGH THE LIGHTENING HOLE WHICH ORIGINATED FROM THE SCREW HOLE. SUBMITTER RECOMMENDS WHEN RECOVERING, THAT SCREW HOLES ARE OF PROPER SIZE.
