AIRCRAFT 851FE COMPLETED AN AIR RETURN TO SJU DUE TO A STRONG ACRILIC SMELL IN THE COCKPIT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED BACK IN SJU SAFELY AND NO EMERGENCY WAS DELCLARED. AFTER OFFLOAD OF 851FE, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM A BULK SHIPMENT OF SHOES AND THE PLASTIC MATERIAL THE SENDER USED WAS THE CAUSE OF THE ACRILIC SMELL.
CHIP DETECTOR LIGHT CAME ON IN FLIGHT. MAINTENANCE INSPECTED BOTH CHIP DETECTORS. DEBRIS FOUND ON AGB CHIP DETECTOR. PERFORMED INSPECTION OF OIL FILTER, NO CONTAMINATION FOUND. CLEANED CHIP DETECTOR AND REINSTALLED. PERFORMED ENGINE GROUND RUNS AND REINSPECTED CHIP DETECTOR. NO FURTHER CONTAMINATION WAS FOUND.
DURING CLIMBOUT, OBSERVED A MIST OR CONDENSATION IN COCKPIT & INSIDE OF WINDSCREEN. PILOT SELECTED WINDSHIELD DEFROST WHICH ACCELERATED RATE OF CONDENSATION. DESELECTED DEFROST, CABIN HEAT & DONNED EMERGENCY O2. DECLARED EMERGENCY DUE TO SUSPECTED SMOKE & RETURNED. STANDING WATER IN CABIN HEATER BOX. AIRCRAFT OPERATED IN HEAVY WIND & RAINY CONDITIONS DURING BOTH GROUND & FLIGHT TIME. SERVICEABLE AFTER DRYING WITH COMPRESSED AIR. MAINTENANCE FOUND WATER IN FWD/AFT DISTRIBUTION BOX & DRIED WITH COMPRESSED AIR. PERFORMED GROUND RUNS AT MAX HEAT. NO FURTHER DISCREPANCIES NOTED. SUSPECT WATER MAY HAVE ENTERED CABIN DURING GROUND TIME (MAIN DOOR OPEN) AND ACCUMULATED IN LEFT & RIGHT PLENUN.
WING STRINGER WAS FOUND CRACKED DURING A ROUTINE INSPECTION. CAUSE OF STRINGER FAILURE UNKNOWN. TWELVE OTHER, P/N 2622000-64, STRINGERS HAVE BEEN FOUND CRACKED ON 208 AND 208B AIRCRAFT WITH PART TT RANGING FROM 596 TO 6511 HOURS.
