THE CREW ABORTED THE APPROACH, CLIMBED AND HELD IN VFR CONDITIONS. CREW PERFORMED A FLY-BY AND TOWER PERSONNEL VERIFIED NOSE GEAR APPEARED DOWN. RETURNED AIRCRAFT TO HOLDING PATTERN TO REDUCE FUEL LOAD. DECLARED AN EMERGENCY WITH ATC AND PERFORMED AN UNEVENTFUL VISUAL LANDING. MAINTENANCE FOUND NOSE LOCK MICRO SWITCH BAD. REMOVED AND REPLACED. CYCLED GEAR SEVERAL TIMES. OPS CHECKED GOOD.

ANC - AIRPORT RAMP. AIRCRAFT OBSERVED TO BE LEAKING FUEL FROM THE LOWER TAIL SECTION WITHIN A FEW MINUTES FOLLOWING APU START. THE AIRCRAFT ENGINES WERE NOT STARTED. THE APU WAS SHUT DOWN WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT AND THE FLIGHT CANCELLED. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE APU LOW-PRESSURE FUEL FILTER COVER MOUNTING EAR FAILED AT THE SCREW MOUNTING HOLE AND SEPARATED FROM THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT. (X)
