AT APPROX 1539 HOURS ON OCTOBER 8TH 2015 ACFT EXPERIENCED AN ELEC MALFUNCTION WHICH PRODUCED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT, NR 1 VHF RADIO FAILED. IMMEDIATELY NOTICED AN ACRID SMELL IN THE COCKPIT, BEGAN TO TURN AROUND IN AN ATTEMPT TO RETURN TO BASE, WHEN OBSERVED A TENDRIL OF SMOKE EMANATING FROM MY CTR CONSOLE JUST ABOVE THE NR 1 VHF RADIO. INITIATED THE EMER PROCEDURE FOR ELEC FIRE IN FLIGHT WHEN IMMEDIATELY MODERATE SMOKE BEGAN EMANATING FROM THE CTR CONSOLE, IMMEDIATELY INITIATED AN EMER LANDING TO A FIELD WHICH WAS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME FROM 400 FT. PRIOR TO LANDING, WAS ABLE TO MAKE A RADIO CALL, UTILIZING THE NR 2 VHF RADIO, TO ANNOUNCE EMER. UPON LANDING INITIATED EMER ENG SHUTDOWN & REMOVAL OF ALL ELEC POWER. EVACUATED THE ACFT & MOVED A SAFE DISTANCE AWAY. AS THE SMOKE SUBSIDED, NO FIREFIGHTING ACTIVITIES WERE NECESSARY & PROCEEDED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS IS THAT THE NR 1 VHF RADIO CAUGHT FIRE & PRODUCED THE SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. CONDUCTED A ONETIME FLIGHT BACK TO BASE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
FOUND A CRACK AROUND A RIVET HOLE IN THE OUTER SKIN OF THE PILOTS DOOR, REMOVED THE INNER DOOR PANEL AND FOUND FURTHER CRACKS AROUND A PREVIOUS REPAIR AND AROUND THE DOOR LATCH.
DURING CRUISE FLIGHT AND WHILE PASSING AIRPORT, THE NR 2 ENGINE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL CHIP LIGHTS WHICH WERE EXTINGUISHED WITH THE CHIP BURNER. THEN A BRIEF ODOR OF OVERHEATED ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OCCURRED. PILOT ELECTED TO LAND. MECHANIC AFFECTED REPAIRS.
FOUND NR 2 ENGINE COMBUSTION DRAIN VALVE WAS NOT WORKING, REMOVED DRAIN FOR REPLACEMENT AND FOUND A PIECE OF METAL WEDGED INTO COMBUSTION DRAIN VALVE. METAL PIECE REMOVED FROM THE DRAIN VALVE IS APPROX. 0.278 L X 0.272 W X .028 THICK WITH 3 BROKEN EDGES AND 1 MACHINE FINISHED EDGE. AFTER CONSULTING WITH A MANUFACTURER, A SPECIFIC DETERMINATION OF WERE THE PIECE OF METAL CAME FROM CANNOT BE MADE UNTIL THE ENGINE IS TORN DOWN. THE POWER CHECKS OF THIS ENGINE HAVE BEEN DECREASING IN MARGIN FOR THE LAST 130 FLIGHT HOURS, THERE HAVE BEEN NO INDICATIONS OF ANY EMINATE FAILURES.

FRAME X6166 HAS NUMEROUS CRACKS.
FRAME 2L CRACKED AT STRINGER CUTOUT.
NUMEROUS CRACKS IN TAILBOOM STRUCTURE REQUIING ENGINEERED REPAIR. PN 117-22122-15 FRAME 2L CRACKED AT OMEGA STRINGER CUTOUT. PN 105-30251-44 SUPPORT ANGLE CRACKED AT THE TOP OF THE 10L FRAME. PN 105-304061 AFT SPAR CRACKED AT A CAMLOC FASTENER. PN 117-22122-51 FRAME X6616 CRACKED IN NUMEROUS LOCATIONS.
APPROX 2 INCH CRACK ON UPPER EXTERIOR LT DOOR BOXFRAME STRUCTURE WITH LOCALIZED DISTORTION OF SKIN. RT UPPER EXTERIOR DOOR BOX FRAME HAS LOCALIZED DISTORTION.
